Controversies in VAR
In terms of controversy within football VAR is the centre point as it feels like any big game that uses VAR seems to come out with a problem or an error. There are multiple examples this season where we have seen this for instance John Duran's sending-off vs Newcastle is one of the most recent controversies as most spectators believed that even after the use of VAR the decision to give Duran a red card was the wrong decision.
Research done by ESPN showed us that controversy and errors had actually decreased in recent seasons as shown in the diagram to the right. However, the fact research and a diagram showing this is even possible shows that there is too many errors still being made even if it is improving.
I had the privilege of interviewing Tom Victor who is a journalist for multiple firms, most known being FourFourTwo and the BBC. i asked him about what it is like being in an industry that has to discuss those controversies and what boundaries are set when writing about the subject. I also was able to ask him about his opinion on how VAR effects football and whether he thinks any change is needed to be made. you can watch this interview on the left hand side.
