COST OF VAR

One of the downsides of VAR is the cost of putting it in place. the reason it has not yet been introduced to lower leagues is simply because of how expensive it is to have installed for each stadium. The rough estimate of how expensive it is to install a standard football stadium to have VAR is around 7-10 million pounds, which for anyone other than, in the UK, premier league teams and the odd second tier side is massively extortionate and more than many teams outgoings for a whole season.

This was a picture taken of Portman Road undergoing huge renovations over the summer after being promoted to the Premier League. It is said that they had to add over 40 more camera spots across the stadium to accommodate.

However this cost is only to install the correct technology to own VAR, there are also many more aspects of VAR that require a high cost to run. more cameras need to be installed, the stadium may need slight upgrades to be able to use the correct technology or create space for it and there's also a cost to have officials trained and staff maintaining the screens and technology and making sure it is all working correctly and not damaged.
